Pocock Extends CRCA Sponsorship Through 2013
March 16, 2011
To anyone involved in the sport, it's no surprise that rowing is full of remarkably bright and hard-working athletes. Rowing consistently pulls in top team GPA honors across entire athletic departments despite often inconvenient practice schedules. Yet until a few years ago, these stellar athletes weren't getting the national recognition many of their counterparts who played other sports were. Enter the CRCA Pocock All-America Award.
Since 2003, the College Rowing Coaches Association has been organizing and administering this national award that highlights DI, II, III and lightweight women varsity rowers who are not only knock-outs on the water, but also in the classroom. Pocock Racing Shells has been a proud supporter and sponsor of CRCA, and we're excited to have our name on this award. Each team to produce an All-America athlete receives a gorgeous hand-carved plaque to hang in their boathouse with the names of their student-athlete winners displayed on brass name plates below. To date, there are 78 varsity rowing programs and over 600 student athletes with the award. (Check out the archive of winners.)
All-America athletes must have raced in the varsity eight for at least 75% of the season, and boat performance, team rank, coach's comments, individual achievements, and 2k erg score are all taken into consideration. The awards are given out regionally and then nationally at the end of the spring racing season - check row2k.com, collegerowcoach.org, or here for the 2011 announcement.
The CRCA is also responsible for the weekly polls throughout the spring racing season. The USRowing/CRCA Division I, II and III Coaches Polls presented by Pocock Racing Shells can be found on row2k.com.
Currently the CRCA only serves women's rowing programs because men's rowing is not recognized by the NCAA. The CRCA was formed in part to help coaches navigate the additional rules and regulations that being an NCAA Varsity sport includes. Tremendous thanks to all the coaches who give their time to help the CRCA run smoothly, and to President Bill Zack and VP Jane LaRiviere for helping Pocock continue our sponsorship support.
