CRCA Announces 2009 DI and Lightweight Coaches of the Year

The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association is pleased to announce the winners of its National DI Coach of the Year, Assistant Coach of the Year and Lightweight Coach of the Year Awards. These awards are voted on by the membership of the CRCA and are intended to recognize head coaches whose teams have had outstanding success throughout the current season and who have demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach. The DI assistant coach of the year is intended to recognize an assistant coach who has had a significant impact on the performance of his/her team, has shown outstanding commitment to his/her coach and has demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach.

 

Below are the names of the winners of the CRCA National DI Coach of the Year, Assistant Coach of the Year, and Lightweight Coach of the Year awards.

DI National Coach of the Year - Yasmin Farooq, Stanford University
Completing her 3rd year at the helm of the Stanford Women's Crew, Coach Farooq lead her team to a historic first time Team and V8 National Championship in Camden, NJ at the NCAA Championships this past May. This follows a runner up finish in 2008 and a gold medal finish in the Varsity 8 earlier this year at the Pac - 10 Championships.

Prior to coaching, Coach Farooq competed on the US National team from 1989 - 1996 with the highlight of her career being a gold medal in the US Women's 8 at the 1995 World Championships.

DI Assistant Coach of the Year - Dr. Vaclav Kacir, Stanford University
Named Assistant Coach at Stanford in 2007, Coach Kacir helped lead the Stanford team to a 2009 NCAA Team Championship in Camden, NJ late last month. He was responsible for coaching the 2V8 who finished 3rd. At the Pac-10 Championship, his 8 finished 2nd, bettering their 2008 finish of 3rd.

Prior to coaching at Stanford, Coach Kacir coached various Slovakian National Teams.


Lightweight Coach of the Year - Erik Miller, University of Wisconsin
Completing his 3rd year of coaching the Wisconsin lightweights, Coach Miller led his team to their 2nd consecutive National Championship in Sacramento, CA at the IRA Championship this past weekend. This finish followed the winning of the Lightweight Team Trophy at the Eastern Sprints earlier in May for the 3rd consecutive time.

Prior to his last 3 years at Wisconsin, Coach Miller spent 8 years as a member of the US National Team form 1997 - 2004. He was a spare for the 2004 Olympic Games.
